I have always been fascinated with apps in general since they first were introduced to me through my IPhone and IPad. My grandchildren have always been fascinated with technology and my youngest grandson was learning his shapes and colors from an app when he was only a year and a half. I found storybook apps by accident not realizing what they were until I decided to try one and experience it together with my grandchildren. Picture books have always held a fascination for many young children and my children and grandchildren are no exception. I love picture books also. To me words are more powerful with pictures to add to your imagination and give a visual description to the verbal. A storybook app is a picture book to the max with interactions and music. Illustrations come alive with animation. Sound adds another dimension. Children can interact with the story in their own personal way. Watching my grandchildren’s fascination as they avidly searched and investigated each page, I instantly felt the desire to be a part of this magic world that is opening to a new generation. A storybook app is different from an ebook because of the ratio of illustrations to words or text. Ebooks have more text and fewer illustrations.
My background is in art education, but I have begun to study writing and illustrating for children and now am learning how to develop storybook apps for all platforms of smart phones and ereaders. It is a brave new world for authors and illustrators.
