the importance of reading to a young child

the importance of reading to a young child

In this blog post I want to share the importance of reading to young children.  As far back as I can remember children’s books have been there ready to entertain by just picking one up and strolling the pages.

It is such a simple pleasure and one that can be enjoyed by a child alone, but much more meaningful if it is a parent sharing with their child by reading and asking questions about the pictures and the story.  The simplicity of this is sometimes taken for granted the impact that this offers for a young child.  It is usually their first introduction not only to literature but also to art through the illustrations. Other benefits include:

  • enhanced concentration and discipline
  • acclamation of new skills and experiences
  • mastery of language and new vocabulary
  • better communication skills
  • the basics of how to read a book
  • basic speech skills
  • academic excellance
  • enhanced concentration and discipline
  • knowledge that reading is fun
  • bonding the relationship between parent and child

By establishing a daily time to read  and share books with your child, you are taking positive steps for their future growth and education.  As a former teacher, I can ensure you that children that experience this are the students that become to recognize the importance of books and learning.  Trips to the library are a wonderful way for children to find new books they are interested in and it is free. Now books are also as convenient as picking up a smart phone, tablet, or computer.  Each book is a new adventure to be treasured.
