A year and a half ago I paid to have a website created. I designed it but had a company write the code for me and put it up. I have decided it is time for a change and recently separated my fine art from my children’s books and writings so now I have two websites that have branched off from the original one. I am building it myself through WordPress. There is a definite learning curve but I will eventually make it. Since I am trained as an artist and don’t know how to write code or HTML, things can be tricky sometimes. After searching for the easiest solution for a website that was not expensive and difficult to navigate, I chose a template through WordPress because I have had experience with their platform for blogging and like it better than any I have tried. The setup was not that difficult. A domain name, a hosting company and then pick out a WordPress theme. My hosting company told me how to install it on my website and it was as easy as clicking Quickinstall and then setting up a username and passcode. It is literally that quick. After you pick out the theme, you just go through the steps of adding your content which can include text, images and video. It is good to know what pages you want to offer such as home, about, gallery, books, contact, etc. I have found the hard way that the blog is considered a post and is not listed as a page but you can make a choice of whether to put it on your home page or among your other pages. One thing that I found after I started was a great reference on how to set up a WordPress site. This information is very helpful and explains all the terms and options offered by WordPress. One of the most confusing things to me is what plugins to choose for your website. The information on this site gives recommendations on ones that are free for the choosing including ones that will handle your SEO and control spam. Unless you go on recommendations there are so many to choose from that it is difficult to make the right decision. There also certain themes that are especially designed for artists, illustrators and photographers. These are considered portfolio themes. Although I am not finished with this website as of this date, I am definitely further than I was a couple of weeks ago and it will be fun to see it blossom.
