Many weeks roll by without much fanfare, but this week February 15 through the 22, 2015 is bursting with events and holidays. Last weekend was Valentines Day and then we plunge into a week that hosts Presidents Day, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and to those of us involved in children’s books and literature, it is also Kidlit week. If this isn’t enough many people will also be looking forward to Sunday and the Academy Awards, not a holiday but an annual tradition for movie fans and a very big event for the movie industry.
Fat Tuesday is a celebration associated with Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It is more commonly known as Mardi Gras which is French for Fat Tuesday. It is always celebrated the day before Lent begins. The name comes from the custom, in many Catholic countries, of marking the day with feasting before the fasting season of Lent begins. In the Lutheran religion this is known as Shrove Tuesday. Sometimes it also called Pancake Day or Paczki Day. The tradition involves feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. According to the about.com website, “Lent, the 40 days before Easter Sunday, is a season of the Church calendar set aside for Christians to do penance in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Refraining from food can help us to bring our bodies under the control of our souls, but it is also a way of doing penance for past excesses.” There are traditional foods and customs associated with Mardi Gras. I created a board on Pinterest with some recipes and craft, and decorating ideas.
In the wonderous world of Kidlit, kids literature, there are many events, contest and giveaways. Kidlit authors and illustrators are very imaginative special people that create especially for young children to give them their first introduction into literature and art.. The Sub It Club is a kidlit website and blog that is offering for two weeks starting this week contests and giveaways to promote their two-year anniversary. The giveaway also includes a critique by Katie S. Duffield. Stop by and check out the website.
Last but not least, don’t forget the Academy Awards, Sunday night February 22, 2015 with all that glitters is gold, beautiful dresses and men in tuxedos. Here is the list of the nominees. Who are your favorites?
Are you planning to celebrate the big week, Mardi Gras, Ash Wedensday, Kidlit week? Be sure and top it off with watching the Oscars.
