About a year ago, I was washing off some avocado and peach seeds, when suddenly I thought about the idea for Lucy’s And Pablo’s Bug Garden, my newest book. The thought of the seeds reminded me how much fun I had watching my first plant grow in a cup in a window sill at Vacation Bible School. This thought coupled with my youngest grandson’s current fascination for gardening urged me to create this book. I wanted this book to help create a fascination for gardening for young children and to provide a basic understanding of how plants, vegetables, and fruit grow.
Usually I will begin the creation of my children’s books first by writing the text but this time I had an idea for the characters. Within a couple of days, I had drawn the characters and made some adjustments. Then I began the story and the text.
Lucy’s And Pablo’s Bug Garden is a story about resourcefulness and perserverence of Lucy, a ladybug, and Pablo, a preying mantis. Lucy the ladybug and Pablo, the preying mantis, are worried about their lack of food for the coming spring after a rough winter. They decide to take matters in their own hands and learn how to plant a garden for the ailing Mrs. Melrose, which will provide food for her and will attract bugs for them to eat. A visit to a compost helps them find seeds, but a menacing crow has other ideas. Determined to face all odds, Lucy and Pablo work together to accomplish their goal.
In the final phase of production, I hope to have the book available in the Fall. Check back to the Books section of this website for more info.
