Gallery House 12

Recently I was online and was checking through my inbox on LinkedIn and found interesting information on Gallery House 12, a new website for children’s books illustrators and writers.  Interested to know more, I contacted Catherine Lee, the owner and asked her the following questions:

1. How did you come up with the idea for the website for illustrators and writers?
I am an illustrator, and for the two years that I ventured on it and tried finding jobs in the magazine and book industry for children I discovered tons of amazing artists that couldn’t find any jobs, so I tried this. It started last year, but there weren’t a lot of work done at that point, so I decided to start the site over and call it Gallery House 12.

2.What is the reach per month to your prospective clients that offer jobs for the illustrators and writers?
I try to send out the information of the site to publishers in the children’s and ya industry, art retailers, and also greeting card, several times a month. And there are projects that are always offered or made by publishers, looking for a right artist, however, most of the market have illustrators that they work with all the time. The more you send my site, they will enjoy looking at them, but sometimes pick a certain illustrator because it might be on a project not done yet.

3.Are the jobs/services mostly in the form of illustrating for children’s books or are their other opportunities also?

Three venues: Children’s publishing with Young Adult. Art retailers. Greeting Card. We offer a writer’s profile to be dispersed to publishing, and they catch little of writers.

4. Do you expect to cap out at a certain number of illustrators?
I wish I could have a 1-5 illustrators a week, but it’s hard for some of them, financially. Our site is really inexpensive for one year.

5. Does the website primarily appeal to the children’s book market and do you have plans to reach a broader market in illustration such as traditional books, video and film?

I am thinking of reaching out to animation companies, and also the product companies, like shampoo and lotion industry that use freelance or agented artists for some of their work.

Thank you Catherine Lee for the interview and the opportunity to learn more about Gallery House 12, A New Website For Children’s Books Illustrators And Writers. I look forward to having my illustrations included on the website for increased exposure to the children’s book market and hope other children’s books writers and illustrators will check it out also.
