SCBWI Southern Breeze Illustrators Sketchbook event to BAPS Mandir was Saturday, September 27, 2013. The word Mandir means place of worship and prayer in Hindu. It is located in Lilburn, Ga.. As we met outside the gift shop on a beautiful fall day, we admired the large pool with the fountain of elephant heads that lined the entire width of the pool. The visit inside the Mandir was breathtaking. Intriquitely carved stone fills the interior including the walls, columns, and there are 36 different patterns in the ceiling. The stone is Turkish limestone, Italian marble, and pink Indian sandstone. To faiithfully represent their countries traditions, more than 34,000 individual pieces were carved by hand in India, shipped to the USA and assembled in Lilburn in 2007.
We enjoyed time to leisurely sketch the many carved structures within the Mandir and then continued to sketch outside on the grounds. A list of drawing prompts were provided and we also had the opportunity to explore on our own. An especially fun activity inckuded passing the sketchbook and each person adding a new element to a sketch about the Mandir. Afterwards we enjoyed a lunch in Old Lilburn at the 1910 Public House restaurant. As we sat outside we enjoyed the beautiful fall day as we had lunch and shared our sketches and discussed each others current illustration projects. Our SCBWI Southern Breeze Illustrators Sketchbook Event to BAPS Mandir was a great success.
